On 24 January 2024, the Federated Advanced Cyber physical Test range (FACT) project consortium held its kick-off meeting in Oslo, hosted by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (Project Coordinator). In order to assess and validate an equipment's cyber vulnerability, FACT seeks to give Europe a previously unheard-of capacity. Enabling the EU to establish and incorporate a federated cyber-physical test bed will be made possible by this initiative.

Participants included representatives of 19 participating entities from 15 Member States and Associated Country. All of them had the chance to introduce themselves and discuss how they would each contribute to the project. A presentation of their project strategy and anticipated final results was also given by the heads of the Work Packages.

The members of the consortium, including Emproof, emphasised the critical need to improve national coordination and collaboration as well as cyber defense capabilities in order to better prevent, detect, defend against, recover from, and deter cyberattacks on military systems.

''There was substantial value from this inaugural meeting, which emphasised the synergy among consortium members. We are looking forward to further sharing Emproof's experience in embedded software security to significantly contribute to this project'' - Brian Kelly, CEO at Emproof

A project selected by the European Defence Fund 2022

The European Commission has awarded €26.9 million over a three-year period to the FACT project led by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. As part of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP), the European Union established the European Defence Fund (EDF) in 2017 as a financial tool. The first request for proposals was published in 2021. The 2022 EDF has chosen 41 projects, including FACT, from a pool of 134 ideas.

Regarding the next steps, the FACT consortium confirmed that the Concept of Operations (CONOPS) will be presented at the next General Assembly in June 2024. It will be the basis for defining a business model and developing a sustainable range/laboratory capability as a common European asset after the project.

The project is led by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and other consortium members are: AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Approach Cyber, BPTI Inventive, Bianor Services, C&V Consulting, certSIGN, Crosshill Ltd, CR14, Leonardo, Nokia Bell Labs, Latvijas Mobilais Telefons SIA, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Rheinmetall, SPACE HELLAS S.A., TERMA Group, Thales, Università degli Studi di Genova
