Biometric Identification

Ready for identification by body odor or by the rhythm of your heartbeat? The developments in the field of biometric identification have made it possible to open doors, start your car or unlock your mobile phone by identifying your unique biometric features. Biometric identification is also increasingly used in the security field. Since several years Dutch Prison services have been using biometric identification and in March 2014 the use of biometric identification was introduced to the Dutch criminal justice and immigration chain. Furthermore online services and mobile devices are increasingly making use of biometric identification. ING for example will start using voice recognition for online banking and Samsung is planning on introducing an iris-scanning security feature on their smartphones and tablets.

What are the most promising trends in the field of biometric identification related to security? What new business opportunities do those trends provide for? And what are the downsides we are facing when talking about biometric identification and fraud? This HSD Café will focus on the trends in the field of biometric identification and on related business opportunities.

Programme:
First, Ruud van Munster, an expert in the field of biometric identification, will talk about the trends in the domain of biometric identification, and about the opportunities and risks of those trends. Ruud van Munster has been working for more than 40 years on (forensic) image processing and biometrics, such as using biometrics in Dutch passports and for security checks in football stadiums. He has his own consultancy firm in the domain of biometric identification and teaches Security Technology at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences.

Next, we have invited three companies that operate in the biometric identification sector, which will pitch their ideas about the future they see for biometric identification in the security sector.

The first pitch will be given by Reinier van der Drift, CEO of Authasas, a Dutch company which develops authentication hardware and software for healthcare institutions, financial services and government agencies worldwide.

The second pitch will be given by Rui Wang, CEO of Techshino, a Chinese high-tech company, with an office in The Hague, providing products and services of biometric identification and data security.

The third pitch will be given by Ruud ten Hoorn, Commercial director of HSB Identification, a Dutch company which provides electronic identification solutions using biometrics to governments, healthcare institutions and transportation and leisure agencies worldwide. Ruud ten Hoorn will focus in his pitch on the emerging market for biometrics in Africa.

From 17.00 onwards the bar is open for drinks and there will be ample opportunity to network.

About the HSD Café

16.00-17.00 Presentation + Discussion
17.00-17.45 Drinks and networking

The HSD Cafés are organized for HSD partners on every first and third Thursday of each month (except on public holidays). From cyber to critical infrastructure, 20 sessions will be organized around security topics relevant for companies, the government, and knowledge organizations. In the first hour (16.00-17.00) of each HSD Café, an expert will briefly present a security topic, dilemma, or innovation, followed by an informal discussion. The second part of the HSD Café (17.00-17.45) will consist of drinks and a possibility to network.

The HSD Cafés provide an excellent opportunity to meet (potential) business partners, bring along your contacts, expand your knowledge, and shape the debate on key security issues of the future. Tell us what you think. Let your voice count, expand your network, and join the debate!
