The Hague Security Delta would like to invite you to the upcoming HSD-Café on Airport Security. This past summer was overshadowed by a series of terrorist attacks on behalf of or inspired by ISIS. Zaventem in Brussels and Ataturk Airport in Istanbul were both targeted by suicide terrorists, causing mass casualties. Following indications of a possible threat late July, the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee heightened security at Schiphol. Yet, terrorism is one of many headaches. As airports are increasingly relying on IT structures, disruption in any sort would have major consequences. Moreover, the increasing amount of air traffic further complicates security at airports. Airport security is an increasingly complex issue, which requires a multidisciplinary approach.

During this HSD Café we will discuss these various elements of airport security. What is currently on the agenda? Are there any other threats to take into account? What are the most recent innovations in airport security? What is missing? And what are the challenges? How can we improve passenger (and baggage) flows while maintaining security? We have invited a three-headed panel, consisting of experts active different branches of the triple helix, to share their knowledge and expertise on this subject.

The HSD Café is set up as follows:

From 15:30h until 16:00h, the registration-procedure will take place, in which visitors will receive their name badge.

Please make sure you arrive on time, as we would like to start at 16:00h.

From 16:00h until 16:30h, the following experts will share their insights on the matter through brief presentations:

  • Lkol. (Erik) Van Assen (Plv. Coördinator Schiphol, Koninklijke Marechaussee) will reflect on current developments in airport security;
  • Katinka Bergema (TU Delft) will discuss an alternative approach to baggage security;

  • Menno Cadée (Scarabee Security) will elaborate on early recognition and increasing response time.

At 16:30h, the brief presentations will be followed by a discussion, in which the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and share their views.

From 17:00h onwards, the bar is open for drinks and there will be ample opportunity to network.
