Downstreaming / Earth Observation

What is downstreaming and earth observation?
Satellite technology can be used for earth observation, positioning, navigation and timing. Data and information from satellites are already being used to, for example, guard dykes and embankments, to control the stability of infrastructures and to predict the weather. More and more satellite data becomes available that can also be used to improve national security. Not only the use of satellite data, but also combining satellite data with other relevant data has become an important means to generate usable information for security.

Some examples where such a combination can be used are:
• investigations and forensic research
• detection and investigations of wild fires
• crisis and disaster management
• coastguard, maritime and situational awareness
